Maintenance

Here you’ll find a comparison table on the different types of finishes and their maintenance properties.

This is only a guide to help you choose the most appropriate finish for you.

(Do remember it is your floor and you’re the one who is going to be looking after and maintaining it, do not let anyone decide for you).

Polish Type Finish Timber Protection Wear Factor Maintenance
Natural Oil Matt Excellent Low High
Tung Oil Semi-Gloss Excellent Low High
Polyurethane (Water based) Gloss Satin Semi-Gloss Moderate Moderate Moderate
Polyurethane Gloss Satin Semi-Gloss Low Excellent Low

When considering the type of finish please take into account the amount and intensity of direct natural light that enters the rooms throughout the day, this can influence the overall appearance and longevity of your floor finish.

Most finishes darken with age due to UV exposure.

Some finishes, such as solvent based polyurethane, have a 'yellowing' effect which gives a look of yellow/orange into the timber as the finish gets older.

Oils have matt finish and tend to bring out the natural beauty of timber much better than polyurethanes.

Natural oils constitute virtually 100% plant extracts and are ideal for asthmatics and sufferers of allergies.

This finish requires special method of application.

Please bear in mind that the actual wear varies considerably from household to household.

Oils are protectors of timber floors as they penetrate deeper into the timber grain.

Polyurethanes are considered to be surface or plastic coating.

Please do not be confused on the thought that protection is scratch resistance.
